Last November has been very hectic with some private/personal and very exclusive Photography and Aperture 3 tutorials in the Philippines and Germany and of course my Solo Photo Exhibition in Paris, France at the end of the month.
It was in early November; and it all started with a personal Photography trip for a couple of my clients from the US and Thailand in the Mt. Pinatubo Volcano area including some serious Aperture 3 training.
After one week and only one day to spare I left for Germany; here I visited my hometown and then took the train to Hamburg for some scheduled meetings with Magazine editors and yet another private session on Aperture 3.

Big thanks to my good friend Mojan who made some of my travel arrangements in Germany and traveled all the way from Duesseldorf to Hamburg just to catch up with me.
I also caught up with my good old buddy and exceptional Photo Editor Klaus Plaumann from CEPIC Center of the Picture Industry, had a great dinner together and chatted about the good old days.

iPhone memories, with Klaus Plaumann and Mojan in Hamburg, Germany and Jacques in Paris
After a few days in Hamburg I left for Paris for my solo Photo Exhibition; Les Voyages de Gunther Deichmann, a great event and the Exhibition will run until the end of February 2013.
My sincere thanks to Jacques, Pierre and Sarah from ANA Agency who worked so hard during the last few days prior the opening. Besides making last minute arrangements in the Gallery I got spoiled with good French wine and food during my stay… oh how I miss this already… oh well, my favorite hangout in Manila the Cave Wine Bar in Yakal street is not so far away…

The opening of the Exhibition was great with lots of interesting people attending including Editors from some major French Magazines. I made new friends and connected with some cool people from the photo and publishing industry.
It was during opening night when the Editor from the French Geo Magazine approached and handed me fresh of the press the December 2012 Issue of Geo Histoire featuring a double page spread of one of my images.
Now the evening was complete…

The double page in the December 2012 Issue of Geo Histoire, article on Buddhism
While having breakfast the following morning at my Hotel I received an email that one of my images made the cover of the Asian Geographic Passport Magazine in Singapore, including a 10 page article with my images and text by Carmela Cruz on Micronesia.
This morning news developed later into a nice French lunch with Jacques, at our by now well visited Restaurant near the agency.
Of course with the wine not far off…

I actually had very little time for photography during the entire trip but I did managed to squeeze in a few images during my stay in Germany and France, and one of them made it into the exhibition, a last minute call after Jacques sternly insisted on it.

Photography Event: Singapore goes all the way, from TV appearance to the One Asia festival Images of Asia & a lot of fun.
Singapore goes all the way... the passion for Photography!

My spread in the current Asian Geographic Magazine.
I arrived in Singapore on the 19th of October and greeted at the airport by the nice and charming Leslie Quek from the Asian Geographic Magazine.
Then to the Hotel…well not really a Hotel but super cool Apartments called Fraser Place, I had to be early in Singapore due to the Judging of the "Life at the Singapore River Competition" that was sponsored by Frasers.
I checked in my room…wow, now that is what I call living, an extremely nice and very spacious apartment and my home for the entire week.

The view from my Apartment window, Frasers Place Singapore
Thanks to Fraser and Asian Geographic for providing such a cool accommodation, a couple of days later Manuel Librado arrived who was also a Judge for "Life at the Singapore River" including John Thet and Diego Garcia from the Asian Geographic Magazine.
A few days on and we announced the lucky winners and had a nice evening at the Fullerton Hotel.
The next day, I think it was the next day... I was part of a TV Reality show appearance for MediaCorp as a Judge for the Big Shot competition sponsored by Nikon Singapore with a grand prize of some 20,000.00 Singapore Dollars…Wow what a prize!
See below some excerpts from Nikons website, more @ The Big Shot
A reality TV series for amateur and semi-professional photographers where we let your photos do the talkingTHE BIG SHOT of Singapore is about the moving stories behind that photography which often at times, when taken well, can speak a thousand words. Our reality tv series is about stories of seven aspiring photographers and their quests to take the BIG SHOT of Singapore.
Each week, the seven aspiring photographers will do their best to stay in the competition by overcoming the different challenges that await them in each episodic challenge...

GD and Alex Soh in the studio, judging and taping for the the Big Shot
Even Michael Yamashita commented on this super prize and said in his Twitter...
"You heard right. That's 16,000 US dollars. We could use a few more contests like this one in USA. Singapore is absolutely contest crazy!"
It was during the recording of the show that I met Alex Soh a super cool and nice Singapore Photographer who was also on the Judging panel.
After the Judging and elimination of one or two participants we were done and Alex took me for some great lunch eating something called... Duck Rice. Yummy….thanks Alex.
Thursday, the day my “Sister” Jamie arrived…wow so cool had not seen Jamie in a while and we had a real great evening out catching up with all the latest gossip.

Jamie had arrived... our first night out...lots of Sake & Japanese food.
from left: Michael Yamashita, Alex Soh, Jamie Rayer Keet,
Gunther Deichmann & James Whitlow Delano.
Then I got ready for the big Event “One Asia Celebrating the Images of Asia” organized by the Asian Geographic Magazine.
Saturday the first day of the show was interesting, meeting other Photographers and Celebrity Speakers like Michael Yamashita, James Whitlow Delano (James still shoots B&W film which is so cool these days) Manuel Librado and many others.

Now the fun starts...in front of the green wall at the event

OK Guys... lets make my "Sister" Fly... 1, 2, 3 go...
don't you like the movement part, sorry can't show you the scream, he, he.
from left: Manuel Librodo, GD, Michael Yamashita, Alex Soh James Whitlow
Delano & flying Jamie.
A full Program awaited all the visitors with Live Judging, Seminars and Talks.
Unfortunately Steve MacCurry had to cancel his trip due to some other urgent matters and last minute commitments.
Exhibitions of some excellent Photos where on Display and of course Nikon and Canon showed their presence too.

I had two Seminars/Talks:
On Saturday:
Over 30 years: A Journey Through Color & Time… a one and half hour journey through my Photography.
The other on Sunday with the Title:
Are We There Yet? - Post production tips, focus on Apple software and
Multimedia presentation.
No need for Photoshop, if you have Aperture 3. Image manipulation does not belong in Nature and Photo Journalism.
In between all of this I was also one of the Judges in the Live Photo Competition Contest by Asian Geographic, a prestigious event and marathon judging of two hours plus.
More info @ http://www.oneasiafest.com/

Asia Without Borders Live Judging at the Event...
Who is going to have the next highest score?
Some of the entries where excellent and made our decision not easy at times, but a fair and good organized scoring system was in place. Results and winners you find on the Asian Geographic Website http://www.oneasiafest.com/images-of-asia.phtml or in the Magazine.

Excellent Photos on display.
What a week… three different judging sessions, Seminars/Talks and of course our evening outings in good company during the week.
It was a lot of fun, plus an interesting and learning week, meeting old and making new friends like Alex Soh from Singapore who looked after me like no one else, thanks for everything Alex.
Now I like to take this opportunity and thank John Thet and his entire Team for making all this possible, bringing people together who love their craft and showed their passion for Photography.
To celebrate this inaugural event, an Images of Asia Reception took place at IndoChine Empress Place (close to Suntec, on the river). The finale kicked off on Sunday night with a super party with everybody, unwinding after all those long hours from the days before, some of the Guests included:
Lunita Mendoza Editor Asian Geographic, Leslie Quek from AG, John Thet Publisher AG, Daren Tan Nikon Singapore, Rod Andrewartha and friends, Diego Garcia, Elysee Tan AG, Lester Ledesma, Annamarie Blight CNN, Discovery Channel, Philippine Airlines, Silk Air and so many others, I be here all night if I list them all... so please forgive me.
And there were of course all those Photographers mention earlier plus so many others.
Good Photography is NOT dead…maybe a bit sleepy at the moment… but soon to be awaken again.
From all the talks and discussion I had…the trend is defiantly going back to the non use of PhotoShop even the new trend in HDR was frowned upon by many Pros last week.
Long time ago...the Ernst Haas Book “The Creation” was entirely shot on film, the images represented Nature and the sheer beauty of our Planet. Lets not mess it up with some crazy and weird effects.
Remember… NATURE is the most beautiful thing mankind has got… lets keep it that way!

Straits Times, Singapore, Celebrating Images of Asia

The diversity of the Asian region will be celebrated in this weekend’s exhibition with photographs and films
Photography and videography enthusiasts will gather this weekend in Hall 402 at Suntec Convention Centre for Images of Asia, an event that showcases the wonders of the Asian continent.
The exhibits come from different galleries and there are also screenings of still photos and films. To be held tomorrow and on Sunday, the inaugural event will also include talks and workshops by renowned photojournalists such as Steve McCurry and Michael Yamashita.
Mr McCurry is best known for his photograph “Afghan girl”, which was first published on the cover of National Geographic magazine.
The Images of Asia is the first event under the umbrella of OneAsia Festival organized by Asian Geographic. The festival traces its roots to the Asian Geographic Photo Competition, which was organized by the small team that started the Asian Geographic magazine eight years ago.
The competition evolved under the guide of the current publisher John Thet and five years later, it took on the name Asia Without Borders Photo Competition. Since then, the competition has attracted over 9,000 entries from over 100 countries.
Today it has blossomed into AsianGeographic’s OneAisa Festival, where various programmes and events including the Images of Asia, will lead the way to the grand finale in 2011 (OneAsiaFestival.com).
The two-day Images of Asia event will end with an exclusive party at the IndoChine waterfront on Sunday.
Besides photo exhibitions, video screenings and workshops, there will also be more than 70 companies showcasing the latest products such as cameras, lenses and filters, travel-related accessories, and computer software.
A highlight of the event is a “live” judging of the Asian Geographic Asia Without Borders Photo Competition between 4pm t0 6pm on the main stage. This event will be streamed live on the magazine’s website AsianGeo.com.
This year’s prizes will include the Canon EOS 5D Mk II (EF 24-105mm) worth $5,800, Canon EOS 50D (EF-S18-55m) worth $2,099 and watches from Tissot. There will also be an additional $5,000 cash for the grand prize winner.
Canon Singapore, which has been the major prize sponsor since the days of Asian Geographic’s Asia Without Borders Photo Competition, has played a significant role throughout the years in the competitions.
The OneAsia Festival will also be graced by legendary photographers Gunther Deichmann and James Whitlow Delano.

IMAGES WITHOUT BORDERS LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE NON-PROFIT,
100% of profits from sale of works by world class photographers go directly to Doctors Without Borders
www.imageswithoutborders.org
New Orleans, Louisiana - (February 2, 2010)
One hundred and twenty five professional photographers from seven countries have sent their finest images for sale to Images Without Borders, including Peter Carey, Tomas Van Houtryve, Martin Vargas, Jeffrey Lynch, Scott Wood, Julie Dermansky, George Long, Kit Wohl, Gunther Deichmann, and Ian Talbot. Images Without Borders currently offers over 400 fine art prints for sale, and many pieces have sold. An initial donation by PhotoShelter (www.photoshelter.com) of a host website made this project possible.
“When a disaster strikes, artists often have very little money to donate to charitable causes; what they have instead is their artwork,” said co-founder, Stacy Ericson. “While Images Without Borders was born from the recent earthquake in Haiti, it offers a new and channel for artists and art lovers to make contributions over the long term.”
Many of the prints are not ordinarily available to the public, or are sold by galleries at far higher prices. Images Without Borders now hosts over 400 art prints for sale. The project will continue on as a nonprofit to provide ongoing assistance to Doctors Without Borders, the well-regarded relief agency that responds to disasters around the globe.
About Images Without Borders
Images Without Borders sells gallery-quality prints from images donated by world-class photographers, with all sales proceeds (minus the printing costs) going directly to Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in support of their work. Each image is offered by Images Without Borders as a limited edition of ten prints. Gallery Image prints are offered at $50 and $100. iPhotography Image prints are offered at $36. When ten prints have been sold, the image will be retired from this special edition. Images Without Borders is in the process of filing for 501(c)3 non-profit status, and is endorsed by Doctors Without Borders.
About Doctors Without Borders

Respect & Prayers for Corazon Aquino...
former President of the Philippines.
© Gunther Deichmann - Prayers for Former President Corazon Aquino, a child holding a Candle inside a church in Manila, on the 4th of August 2009, the colorful reflections are from the Church windows’ for Filipinos there is always hope, may the future be prosperous & democracy will prevail.
“We don’t have to listen or read,
but an Image can speak a thousand words.”
Aquino's presidency saw the restoration of democratic institutions in the Philippines, through the enactment of a new Constitution which limited the powers of the presidency, restored the bicameral Congress, and renewed emphasis on civil liberties. Her administration was likewise hampered by several military coup attempts by disaffected members of the Philippine military which derailed a return to full political stability and economic development.

an era has finally come to an end.

No Digital, Camera and Gadget talk today...
A sad day for photography! Kodak has now finally announced the discontinuation of its Kodachrome Film, what has long been expected became a reality yesterday.
It was my film of choice for many, many years, as a matter of fact most of my award winning images had been taken with Kodachrome 25. Among the well-known professional photographers who used KODACHROME Film was Ernst Haas, Peter Turner, Eric Meola and Steve McCurry but the list goes on, they all used and loved it. As part of a tribute to KODACHROME Film, Kodak will donate the last rolls of the film to George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, which houses the world’s largest collection of cameras and related artifacts. McCurry will shoot one of those last rolls and the images will be donated to Eastman House.

© Gunther Deichmann - APSARA Dancer at the Royal Performance Hall in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, I had been assigned by Animan Magazine from Switzerland to cover the Mekong River. PRESS RELEASE
Kodak Retires KODACHROME Film; Celebrates Life of Oldest Film Icon in its Portfolio
ROCHESTER, N.Y.--Eastman Kodak Company announced today that it will retire KODACHROME Color Film this year, concluding its 74-year run as a photography icon.
Sales of KODACHROME Film, which became the world’s first commercially successful color film in 1935, have declined dramatically in recent years as photographers turned to newer KODAK Films or to the digital imaging technologies that Kodak pioneered. Today, KODACHROME Film represents just a fraction of one percent of Kodak’s total sales of still-picture films.
“KODACHROME Film is an iconic product and a testament to Kodak’s long and continuing leadership in imaging technology,” said Mary Jane Hellyar, President of Kodak’s Film, Photofinishing and Entertainment Group. "It was certainly a difficult decision to retire it, given its rich history. However, the majority of today's photographers have voiced their preference to capture images with newer technology – both film and digital. Kodak remains committed to providing the highest-performing products – both film and digital – to meet those needs."
While Kodak now derives about 70% of its revenues from commercial and consumer digital businesses, it is the global leader in the film business. Kodak has continued to bring innovative new film products to market, including seven new professional still films and several new VISION2 and VISION3 motion picture films in the past three years. These new still film products are among those that have become the dominant choice for those professional and advanced amateur photographers who use KODAK Films...for the complete Press release go to: http://www.pdngearguide.com/gearguide/content_

Palau cites human rights in resettling detainees
Associated Press, 06.11.09, 12:44 AM EDT
WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- Palau's president says his tiny Pacific island state considered human rights - and not China's reaction - when it agreed to take in 17 Chinese Muslim separatists detained at Guantanamo Bay.
Palau President Johnson Toribiong says his country has agreed to a U.S. request to resettle the detainees out of humanitarian concerns and because their imprisonment is unlawful...

On my last day in Bangkok I took the opportunity and shot some frames across the Chao Phraya River which runs through the heart of Bangkok using my Nikon D700 at ISO 6400, lets call it “The last frame”. Amazing how the Nikon D700 can handle this type of situation, even at the high ISO the noise is acceptable. Of course not for huge blowups, but good enough for the web or smaller reproductions in print, and if it gets too noisy at even higher ISO (24000) then we can always resort to Noise Ninja a separate Plug-in for Aperture 2.

Underwater Photography & Aperture 2 during and after the Thailand Dive and Travel Expo, part 2

Sunday the 17 of May, the last Aperture 2 seminar in the open area at the Thailand Dive and Travel Expo, a very interesting crowd and some photographer even brought their MacBook Pro’s with them. The scheduled one-hour basic Aperture 2 seminar turned into a serious two-hour session.
Later in the week I also caught up with my long time friends, well known Photo-Journalist John Everingham and Chris Ryan in Bangkok, talked about the good old days and chatting way over a few beers overlooking the Chao Phraya River which flows through the heart of Bangkok.

Special thanks again to the organizers from the TDEX and of course to Mean and Aye from Fins for making my stay in Bangkok so enjoyable.

Translated Headline:“The only thing left from the Sharks”
The Photo was taken in Bali on the 8th of October in the small commercial Harbor of Denpasar Bali, Indonesia.
I just happen to come across a vessel unloading not only Fish but massive amounts of Shark fins.
Each time a pile of shark fins had been cleared of the deck and trucked away by small trucks more Shark Fins appeared from the Hull of the vessel. I left the scene after about 45 minutes but the unloading continued, thousands of Shark fins of all species. I recognized Hammerheads, White tip and Black tip sharks.
I believe the reason for the worker wearing the hood is due to the cold temperature in the hull, (or is he hiding his face)? All fins had been frozen, which indicates that the vessel came from a longer trip. I could not get into the area where the fins where transported to by the trucks, which could have revealed most likely the real scope of this “catch”.

Introducing the Saffron Robes from Siem Reap, Cambodia…
Saffron Antiquity
From the 9th to the 15th centuries, Angkor was the political, religious and cultural capital of the Khmer Empire. During its 12th- to 13th-century golden age, this was one of the most powerful kingdoms in Southeast Asia, holding sway from southwest China to the southern tip of Indochina and from Vietnam to the Bay of Bengal. But, following the Empire's collapse, the whole of the Angkor temple complex, nearly reclaimed by the jungle, was lost for long periods to most of the world.
The ruins of Angkor are magnificent in themselves — few civilizations in the world have left monuments so impressive.
But they're all the more impressive for what they suggest — for the sights that are no longer there, a way of life that vanished, in large part, withthe wood, woven bamboo and thatch secular buildings that have long since decayed, leaving only the stone-and-brick skeleton of the imperial centre. These ruins can help conjure a world that is truly marvelous; and that is part of their value as part of our cultural world heritage. Remarkably, furthermore, Angkor has always maintained a living heritage — these ancient spiritual centres have never died.

There is a PDF file of the complete story (6 pages) on my main site under Publications,
here is the LINK The pdf file will be available in 48 hours
Buddhist monks continued to maintain Angkor as an important pilgrimage site from the 15th till the late 19th century, when Western scholars first began to explore this jungle-shrouded, lost city of fable. And Bayon, for example — a temple mound at the heart of Angkor Thom, a former capital of the Khmer Empire and one of the most important sites — still attracts monks and nuns from all parts of Cambodia.
Visitors should try to see Angkor Wat in the sunrise. The complex faces west, so the sun rises behind it, framing silhouettes against the dawn sky as, already at 6.30am, orange-robed monks go about their business.

Forget sight-seeing, light-seeing is the new must-do activity for visitors to Berlin this month.
The German capital city is holding its annual Festival of Lights where its landmark buildings like the Brandenburg Gate and the radio tower become ablaze with color.
According to the organizers, during the two week festival, light shows, projections and firework displays take place as well as, "numerous cultural events dealing with the subject 'light'".

NEWS: Aperture 2 or now Aperture 2.1.1 at the Beijing Olympics, an interesting article by David Schloss from the AUN...Photoshop, Bridge, Aperture...the race is on…or is it won already?
In his article David is absolutely right, many Photographers dont have the time, (try to make time) or could not be bothered to change. I know many such cases...but I know also many others who are willing to listening and try very hard to make the switch from Photoshop to Aperture, in the end it is for their own benefit. I had similar reports from India where Photographers like to make the change but find it difficult to switch from their existing workflow, the lack of “HANDS ON” a common problem...but how can we solve this?
Websites like AUN (http://www.apertureprofessional.com/) and O’Reily (http://digitalmedia.oreilly.com/aperture/certainly) can help you a lot, or the Tutorials from the Apple Aperture site, (http://www.apple.com/aperture/tutorials/) events like the Olympic Games in Beijing are certainly a great help for all our News/Sports Photographers, and gauging from the sheer scale Apple has put up at the Beijing Olympics there is no doubt in my mind on the SOLID COMMITMENT for the Pro and Amateur Photographer by Apple.

as David Schloss put it so nice...
"How to shoot at 10-frames-per-second and edit at 12-frames-per-hour."
Local and regional Retail Apple/Mac shops can contribute in hosting some Aperture events, introducing Aperture 2 at least to a basic level, I know some of these event have been organized in the US and we have done quiet a few in the Philippines with the support of the Power Mac Center in Manila, for Training schedules go to: http://www.powermaccenter.com/
My personal opinion and closing words...get familiar with one software instead messing around with many different ones. You find Aperture is not that difficult to learn or to digest, it might be a bit strange in the beginning (no need to SAVE anything) but as time goes by you going to love it...like I do. Plus you have all the integration on the Mac, perfect for events like the Olympic Games.
But now to Beijing...
Beijing Olympics and the Photoshop Paradox
( posted by David Schloss on Yesterday, 08:37 AM )
The AUN's been on the scene at the Olympics for nearly two weeks, working with Apple in the Main Press Center helping to provide support for the one-thousand-plus journalists who have descended on Beijing to cover the world's largest sporting event. While I've just arrived in country to replace someone who has been here for weeks, I've already noticed examples of what I like to call the Photoshop Paradox or "How to shoot at 10-frames-per-second and edit at 12-frames-per-hour."
Apple's got a rather large amount of support available in the MPC, (we're in the lower level, relatively near the McDonalds) with fifty MacPro desktop systems set up connected to 30-inch Cinema Displays. Members of the media are welcome to come and hook up to them and work on Aperture or any of a number of other programs on the machines, and the "broadband" connections mean that photographers can go from shooting to submission in no time.
That is, unless they are still using Photoshop as their main image management tool. I'm not talking about Bridge, I've seen a few photographers who are using various iterations of that image preview and editing tool, but for some reason many of the shooters—at least many of those who bring their own laptops in to work on their images—still have a workflow whereby they open up dozens of images at a time in Photoshop, and use that interface as the way to make their image selection...

Marlon Stockinger, sponsored by BMW and Swiss Private Bank Sarasin, put in a stellar performance last weekend at the Sepang International Grand Prix Circuit in Malaysia, where Asia Pacific’s Finest young racers gathered for a four-day race meeting. After struggling in the opening rounds of this year’s Formula BMW Pacific Championship during the recent F1 Grand Prix in Sepang, he is gaining confidence with each outing. “I made some smart overtaking moves and quick lap times. The team (Eurasia Motorsport) did an excellent job, the car felt great and it was really enjoyable. I think I am making progress. It helps build my morale and I can look towards the front of the field with confidence”, says Stockinger.

No need for many words but Burma needs help...I have traveled through this amazing and very beautiful Country years ago and the Burmese people are some of the most gentle in South East Asia...deprived of their freedom by a brutal Military Regime who will not even let outside help into the country in times of real need. This has to stop...
A group of Monks helped me many years ago from being arrested, now I have seen them getting beaten by the Military and Police why is outside help been delayed when it is needed most?
As a travel Photographer/Journalist I feel responsible to voice my opinion, even if this will not change the currant situation...lets hope there be a change for the better in the near future.

Back to the F1 Grand Prix and Formula BMW… this time a report from India.
Received two articles from Kamlesh Patel in Chennai India… Mumbai? India? Sounds very familiar… it is still around from one extreme to the next again.
OK. OK. That’s enough…back to our young Racing Driver from The Eurasia Team who made 3rd place recently in Sepang Malaysia.
Now the team is looking forward to the big and exciting race in Singapore soon, the very first F1 Grand Prix at night. Is this going to be very fast?
But for sure furious… The Formula BMW Eurasia Team with Aditya Patel & Marlon Stockinger will be there as the support race in their Formula BMW.

Late NEWS…more images from AMAZING INDIA on the PhotoShelter Archive now…plus almost forgotten in 3rd place Aditya Patel from Chennai India with the Eurasia Team at the recent Formula BMW & more with Aperture 2
Late NEWS can be good NEWS!
Sometimes it is strange how things come together, remember when I was reporting on the F1 Grand Prix and Formula BMW from Sepang Malaysia during the month of March, which was organized and sponsored by PETRONAS.
But first some more info on PhotoShelter before we talk about Aditya Patel from Chennai in India.
Below a screen shot of my PhotoShelter Archives web page…once you see that you know you in the right place… here is the link again.
If you click on the Yellow one that is for the Archive selection all the new images are allready there...the green one is for the PhotoShelter Collection… I am waiting on the editors now before you can view the latest images in the PSC too.

After the event I traveled to Mumbai in India…and I should have mention Aditya Patel, sorry I just forget, but you know it has been very hectic the past few month so please forgive me.
Aditya is Marlon Stockinger’s team mate in the EURASIA team, Aditya Patel from Chennai in India… another coincident? Maybe… since I left for Mumbai in India only
a few days after the F1 Grand Prix.
Now you might wonder what has all of this to do with Aperture 2 again… a lot… Aditya’s father ask me to send some high resolution images to him in India…
no problems I said… I uploaded the images of Aditya on my favorite… the Aperture Web Gallery and it was done even before I left for Mumbai.
See below some article I have just come across on Aditya Patel, another young upcoming driver… and I guess the fast and furious continues, congratulation on his achievement finishing an impressive 3rd place.
I guess I have to visit Chennai in the near future…
they don’t call it for nothing “Amazing India”

Some Press releases below: BMW NEWS

FBMW Pacific: Eurasia Motorsport - Aditya Patel third in Sepang race one
24/03/2008
Eurasia Motorsport’s Aditya Patel finished an impressive third place in the first round of the Formula BMW Pacific Series held at Sepang Circuit’s Malaysian F1 GP support race. Team Mate Marlon Stockinger was tenth in an atrociously wet race.
The heavens opened as the cars pulled away on the formation lap and the track was awash by the time the lights went out for the start. Patel made a great start from seventh on the grid to slot into fifth place. Ross Jamison took the lead and was never headed whilst those behind struggled for visibility in the blinding spray. Patel was quickly up to fourth but spun under braking for the final turn attempting to pass Sean McDonagh. He was quickly under way again and was soon back in a battle for second place after McDonagh and Simon Moss also both suffered off course excursions.
Patel was past McDonagh into third place a couple of laps later and then hounded Moss to the line, just not quite able to find a way past. It was a great drive in just about the worse conditions seen in a F.BMW race in the region. Stockinger in his first ever car race was at one point up to seventh place but faded to tenth after a spin. “I couldn’t believe how little you can see in these conditions” remarked Stockinger.

Aperture certainly made my life a lot easier these past few weeks…from the extreme F1 Grand Prix in Sepang Malaysia where I joined Marlon Stockinger on his Formula BMW debut, remember the fast anf furious…to Mumbai India for the Apple Aperture World Tour and then straight to Boracay Island in the Philippines for a commercial shoot, it has been non stop and thousands of images later, a few hectic weeks have gone by.

If you are a photographer and shoot a lot of images then Aperture is the solution not only of its editing and management capabilities but the integration with the Mac…editing has become fun again…not to mention the new plug-ins soon available with Aperture 2.1 ( click this link for more info)
For me who is constantly on the road it is the ultimate software my “Road Warrior”
fast and efficient, Aperture 1 was the missing link in Photography but now with Aperture 2.1 Apple has set a standard for the workflow after the shoot and with an amazing image management system.
… enjoy the images, thanks to Aperture I managed to get them out very fast, now I can concentrate on my next trip creating images and not having to worry how I am going to edit them quickly and efficient.

Extremes & contrast...Mumbai India
© Gunther Deichmann - Mumbai India, April 2, 2008
A very big thank you to Mumbai in India for the incredible hospitality, the people and the amazing colors around me and of course the great food.
Yes you have guessed right the Apple Aperture event in Mumbai is completed and I am hanging around for a few extra days and realized that I should have come to India a lot sooner.
The Journey continues through Color and Time... or more like contrast and extremes I have encountered the last few days and as you all know... I love contrast!
Thanks to the Apple Aperture team for having me on board and my special thanks to all the wonderful people I have met during the event and on the road.
See below some images from the Apple Aperture event and in the coming days I feature some images from my few days in and around Mumabi, yes Aperture 2 came again very handy, since the event I have shot some 1800 images in just a few days, it really helps to have a Road Warrior like Aperture around.

Anyway with Aperture 2.1 at least it is quick and very efficient not like before spending hours on end in Photoshop, now I can get some sleep which reminds me I have to hit the sheets soon. Sorry for the delay of this Blog from Mumbai, but I hope you understand that I rather shoot and create images then writing all night long... there is just to much contrast and color around me at the moment.
Dont worry the blogs keep flowing again as soon I am back in Manila... with some more new and helpful information about Aperture 2.1

The last lap from the F1 Grand Prix in Sepang Malaysia, then I have caught up before leaving for Mumbai in India on Sunday.
I hope for a better connection from the land of red hot chili peppers and tasty curries, it would be so nice to give you a live report from the Apple Aperture 2 World Tour in Mumbai, lets wait and see. Of course I be staying a few extra days and shoot some images…the Journey Through Color and Time continues.
Ok., lets wrap things up with Marlon Stockinger and the F1 Grand Prix in Malaysia, today I have included some behind the scene images and a couple cool action shots, a Ferrari and some action of the GP 2 plus the Formula BMW.
Kimi makes it so easy… Ferrari was leading the pack with Kimi Raikkonen placed 1st., 2nd was Robert Kubica in a BMW- Sauber & 3rd was Heikki Kovalainen in a McLaren.
Luis Hamilton the winner in the Australian Grand Prix recently placed himself at the 5th position in a McLaren.

Ferrari is leading the pack...
For our photographer friends some more info on Aperture 2 …I have already uploaded all the images from the F1 Grand Prix into my PhotoShelter collection…not bad in just a few days we provided you with some blogs and I prepared a Mac Web Gallery with medium size resolution images for Marlon, for press releases etc., etc.
Of course you can only access this one with a password and username, you might write to Marlon and get the access code, you find his personal info on his website @

PRESS RELEASE... Stockinger gets Baptism of Fire at Malaysian F1 Grand Prix & Formula BMW
Stockinger gets Baptism of Fire at Malaysian F1 Grand Prix
16 year old Filipino race driver Marlon Stockinger had his racing debut last weekend at the 2008 Malaysian F1 Grand Prix in a Formula BMW car, driving for team Eurasia Motorsport. The series supports the F1 events in Sepang, Singapore and Fuji, Japan.

© Gunther Deichmann - getting ready...a rainy start.
The conditions couldn’t have been been worse for his first ever car race. The heavens opened when the 14 cars were lined up on the starting grid and the track was awash by the time the lights went out for the start. “My qualifying didn’t go so well, so I started on 10th position. The spray from the other cars was so intense, I couldn’t see a thing. Imagine driving at 200 km/h with your eyes closed! I never had experienced such conditions throughout my whole karting career. You literally have to keep a map of the track in your mind, otherwise you become completely disoriented”, said Stockinger. “It was quite a shock for me, since I just didn’t know what to expect.”

© Gunther Deichmann - Marlon is his BMW during the heavy rain(center car)
Indian Team mate Aditya Patel had a good start from 7th place on the grid whilst Ross Jamison of Hong Kong, Simon Moss of South Africa and Sean McDonagh of Korea took the lead, leaving the others behind, struggling for visibility. Stockinger was at one point up to 7th place, but faded to 10th after a spin. Patel eventually overtook McDonagh and joined Jamison and Moss on the podium in 3rd place.
On Sunday the skies were clear and the conditions dry. “I had to start from 10th place again, but this time I felt more at ease and started to enjoy the race and overtake some people. My lap times were at par with the front runners and we had some good racing going on. I have to work hard on my qualifying and driving technique, since most of the other drivers have already some racing experience in cars”, says Stockinger, ending the race in 8th position overall and 3rd in the Rookie Cup respectively. Moss, Jamison and McDonagh made the podium whereas Patel was forced to retire as a result of damage inflicted after he was punted into a spin at the first turn.

Catching up...Kimi Raikkonen and his Ferrari make it so easy...it has been a perfect week at the F1 Grand Prix in Sepang Malaysia

© Gunther Deichmann - F1 Grand Prix Sepang Malaysia
I did some pre editing since my connection was just not there...at least I had a head start before I got back to Manila. In the next few days I post more images on this Blog just stay tuned. Great action from Sepang in soaring heat and a heavy tropical shower during the Formula BMW's first race, Marlon Stockingers first major race... straight into the unknown... heavy rain a real challenge for him. Also later this week some images from behind the scene...the supporters, spectators, Pit action and more...I shot some 3000 images and Aperture 2 went through it without a glitch, as a matter of fact I could not have done it with out Aperture, working every night with my Mac Book Pro and two external Lacie hard drives storing the files during import as reference files, the second drive for back up purpose.
I got sunburned and looked like a red Ferrari...then I got drenched in the rain including my Cameras... but it was fun being there, thanks to Tom Stockinger and the fantastic Eurasia team a great bunch to hang around with.

The text has been visible but the images have not, anyway here is the missing part from Day one at Sepang. In the next few days I update all of it with some nice action photos.
Sorry for the inconvenience but I make up for it in the next few days with some images from all the races and behind the scenes. I guess you all know that Kimmi Raikkonen of Ferrari has won the Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang circuit yesterday.

Today has been my first day in Sepang, everybody is getting ready for the F1 race, Formula BMW with Marlon Stockingers first race, the Porsche Carrera Cup and the GP 2 Asia.
The temperature soared today, I got my usual sunburn and look like a red Ferrari now, but we had a chance to watch the F1 cars doing their practice run and of-course all the interesting action in the Pit with the Formula BMW and the GP 2 Asia. A lot more images in the next few days, working on my connection tonight try to get that one down.
Check out some of the images from this hot very hot day, but I dont think this is going to stop the fast and furious...well it slowed me down a bit, as predicted Aperture 2 performed just great uploading was a breeze and the editing went just as planed...only a slow connection today.
L. Hamilton F1 driver announced today that his team is in good shape for the race on Sunday the 24th of March...

Concern for Tibet…& in two days reporting from Sepang in Malaysia on the Formula BMW with Marlon Stockinger and the F1 Grand Prix with Aperture 2
Now some sad NEWS and my concern for Tibet, a country that I love so much… is there a Storm brewing over the Potala in Lhasa?

Is this Monk concerned about the future...?
I sincerely hope that peace will avail and this uprising will not spin out of control, during a recent press conference the Dalai Lama caution constrain on both sides, violence will not solve this problem only dialogue and common sense. Below a short intro from the Exhibition organizers... more info and images soon on this blog...

The exhibition is about to protect environment and animals. We are fighting for our nature as well as for nature of the Planet. And it is very important to us, that environmental photographers from all over the world also add their voice for voiceless.
The exhibition will take place in Armenian Center Of Contemporary Experimental Art. This is going to be a big event in Armenia, which includes photography, fine art and sculpture, film and video arts, rock and classical concert etc., etc.

Aperture 2 with the .Mac Gallery soon at the Sepang Malaysia 2008 Grand Prix Formula 1 Race race track…& pre selection for a German publisher via .Mac Gallery…that is integration.
Aperture 2 soon at the Sepang Malaysia 2008 Grand Prix Formula 1 Race race track… It was here where Alonso and Hamilton finish 1 and 2 positions. ...A double win for McLaren team in their recent F1 race in Sepang in 2007.
Good luck to Marlon Stockinger in 2008 for his first major race the
Formula BMW Pacific
http://www.marlonstockinger.com/index.html
A test drive for the weekend…my advice…make time for this super cool addition play and explore the Web Gallery in Aperture 2.
I have provided some insight and samples below... go and take your test drive and download your trial copy @ http://www.apple.com/aperture/trial/
As promised here is my follow up with these Philippine stock images for a German Publisher…I have provided some tips how to make things so much faster using the Web Gallery within Aperture 2, but before I go into all the details let me say this…fantastic integration and so efficient having this ability is just so amazing.
I am not bragging… maybe just a bit… (justified) I am just so impressed… like in evolution the missing link came with Aperture 1.0 but with Aperture 2 we started to walk upright…but to be honest, I am actually running.
Sounds like I am back in to my fossils…discovery of man… Aperture 2.
Apple has created something with this addition that I have been looking for in a very long time. I mention in my earlier Blog that Aperture 2 is my Road Warrior now, I have won not only the battle but the war…all jokes aside when you travel like me and you have this amazing ability then I ask my self what else do I need.

Preparing a .Mac Web Gallery - once you have selected NEW Web Gallery select your Project or Images see red oval on the left and publish it, the open window on top red oval is actually my Activity window the red circle is the icon to activate it, this is super useful, you always know what is happen in the background, no need to worry.

Below right hand side the red circle again but not shown in the image above is again a very easy overlooked small icon called Web Gallery - click here and you find all the rest you need for publishing like... Settings...Visit Web Gallery... Tell a Friend you can set passwords, username and all sorts of different things...very cool, but you have to drive a little bit with this one, dont worry you figure it out in no time.

This is the actually Web Gallery from the internet browser, there are so many cool effects and options for viewing, these are some of the images from the Philippines in low res. for the publisher in Germany, the first batch...now if you click on Tell a Friend or you can tell your client...see the red circle again and see what pops up now...the image below... fill in the details and you are done...plus you have a very happy friend or client since they did not expected this so fast...on time again... or from the F1 Grand Prix 2008 in Sepang, Malaysia shortly.

The last thing you have to do...
Tell a Friend or tell your client
Soon I am at the Grand Prix F1 race in Sepang Malaysia, this time to cover Marlon Stockinger for his Formula BMW also called Formel BMW… the real race… no more test driving plus all the F1 show, the Ferraris, the pretty girls, the mechanics etc., etc.
Sepang Malaysia 2008 Grand Prix Formula 1 Race will be on 23 March 2008...
I be driving Aperture 2 and I guess Marlon Stockinger driving the Formula BMW Pacific…the fast and furies continues…
With this new addition in Aperture 2 I can report direct from the event in almost real time, you better believe it, I am sending you the racing results from Sepang via the .Mac Web Gallery.
What do you need to accomplish all of this? You might ask... Well, a Mac...Aperture 2 a .Mac account and a good connection that’s about it, so simple, don’t you think. Here comes the magic word again…Total Integration! Ha,ha...I have not left Aperture all day...one software that is all I need on the road.
Now I can supply my clients from almost anywhere in the world, including Palau Micronesia and Chuuk, with a pre selection of jpg images or even the Raw files …but you have to have a connection.
What ever happen to Boracay? This tropical Island paradise? The weather is still not to my liking…don’t worry we get there soon, but after the F1 race, you just have to stay tuned.

for another lap, leaving the Pit.
I have to admit I am game sometimes, I installed Aperture 2 and after a few minutes was up and running, the very first thing I noticed was the speed and it was so much smoother, I have to get used to the new layout yet, but from what I have seen so far, that won't take long at all. I quickly checked out some of the new features and was honestly very impressed and surprised, but a lot more on that later, as the saying goes first impression counts and I am impressed!
Installation was a breeze and no conflict with my previous images, everything was there, so dont be shy or scared, get your copy today and install it into you Machine. All the images below of Marlon and the preparation of the Porsche Carrera Cup (Carrera Cup Series) on the Sepang F1 Circuit are direct from Aperture 2, I am having fun and more test driving over the weekend, using the images from this very fast and recent shoot. Marlon and Tom Stoeckinger are still in Sepang, Marlon running some more high speed lap's, and I am running my own high speed test on Aperture 2, I am very impressed with the driving skills of Marlon, but my first lap on Aperture 2 got me very excited, as with Marlon there be a lot more news coming and I guess with Aperture 2 as well.

The timing and the arrival of Aperture 2 was just perfect and a real test drive for me, coinciding with the fast and furious from Sepang Malaysia. The fast and furious...extreme contrast...Formula BMW Pacific, Sepang Malaysia & now Aperture 2...

Four days ago the phone rang...hi Gunther this is Tom, how do you feel like going to Sepang Malaysia with me and Marlon for the Formula BMW Pacific trail/test runs prior the F1 Race later in March. Ok., can do... when are we leaving? Well in two days... oh boy I just returned from Micronesia a few days ago and now I am off for something very different, now that is what I call contrast, but you all know I love contrast anyway. You might remember Marlon from one of my earlier blogs, (from the 22- 12 -2007) when he got his BMW Scholar ship, now he is getting ready for his first Race.
This was an opportunity I could not miss, besides Tom been a good friend and I have know Marlon since birth.
So here I am in Sepang at the F1 Circuit and shooting the test trails for Marlon, in his BMW, very different from the stuff I shot only a few weeks ago.

This is fast very fast, shooting high speed with my Nikons the D2X and the D200, on the first day alone I went through some 1500 images and today was not much different, we start in the morning about 7AM until 6PM, then back to the Hotel eat and then I am editing on Aperture... only to find out during my stay in Kuala Lumpur that Aperture 2 has been released.
I did find some time to briefly check it out, and from what I have read so far, I wish I could have had it here some awesome new stuff in Aperture 2, mark my words for it.
I guess I have to deal with that later and have my own test drive, and once I am done with that I make sure I let you know all the details, just stay tuned.

During these tests trails with Marlon Stoeckinger it was a pleasure to work with Aperture, again and again what would I have done with out it, no way I could have done my editing in such a short time if you shoot some 8 frames per second you need Aperture. I thank Tom for inviting me along and it was real great seeing Marlon driving on this World famous F1 Circuit.
What is also amazing, during his breaks he picked up his iPod and listening to Nickelback, relaxing in between his Race schedule, and not only that; today he picked up his black Mac Book and input some lap times. For some strange reason I do run into Mac's these past few weeks, remember the Kids from the Chuuk High School, that was only a couple weeks ago. I will continue this story about a teenager, who is working his way up to become one of these days a Formula 1 driver, he is certainly going in the right direction, Marlon has just amazing driving skills for his age, 17 years to be exact.
He be driving the Formula BMW Pacific next in Sepang, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan, following the F1 around with his Formula BMW Pacific, the Eurasia Team.

Marlon loves and listening to Nickelback on his iPod, and carries his Black Mac Book with him where ever he goes, like me I could not do all of this without Aperture... the fast and furious... sort off, but for sure contrast from one extreme to the other, romantic resorts in the pacific to a F1 Circuit, I guess it is never boring.
We certainly hear a lot more of Marlon Stoeckinger in the month to come... the season has just started... good luck Marlon.
Marlon's website is going to be updated very soon, www.marlonstoeckinger.com
More in a few days, I have to get some sleep some times, good night and
Love from Malaysia, it is Valentines Day after all.

The Angkor Photography Festival

© Gunther Deichmann
It has been a year, well almost that I attended the Apple seminar with other top Asian photographers on Aperture, being on the advisory board for Aperture, we have come a long way since, all this happen during the Angkor Photography Festival in 2006.
Last year Martin Gisborne from Apple listening to what we had to say, what could be improved etc., etc.
Now one year later... I have just returned from Siam Reap from a Photo workshop and now next month the Festival again for the the 3rd year running.
How do we know it is happen? Well one criticism I have, nobody knows, a great event but poorly advertised, why I dont know.
Unless you are a Photographer and that is in question too, as a matter of fact I only found out about a month ago about this years program, maybe we as Photographers should not do the organizing, this is suppose to be for all, not only for Pro Photographers but upcoming ones too.
A super Idea and for sure down the road a success but only if everybody knows about it and not only a small group of people, I sincerely hope that this years festival shows more than just images of war, turn on CNN you have it everyday, I know the past only to well, I have been traveling to Cambodia since 1992, but believe me there is also so much beauty out there, not only the past, lets not forget it by all means, but lets try to take in the beauty around us, the Cambodians are some of the nicest people I have met and the culture is just beyond your imagination.
Is this festival really for the ones in need, or is it just a big party for the ones who can afford it?
I hope this year is going to be better, I be there for sure and I keep my eyes, ears and mind open, I have tried to make a donation this year but the organizers did not listening, nothing big, but every little bit counts I guess, or does it not anymore.
GD.

ANGKOR PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL
3rd edition
November 17th - 28th, 2007
Siam Reap - Cambodia
The Angkor Photography Festival, the first of its kind in Asia, was created in 2005 by Christophe Loviny, Gary Knight and Jean-Yves Navel. This year, for the third time, the temples of Angkor willbecome a hub for both famous and passionate photographers from across the world. The strong educational goals of the Angkor Photography Festival sets it apart from other photography events. Here, the participants contribute their art and their time, demonstrating that photography can change lives. The Angkor Photography Festival organizes free workshops for emerging Asian photographers, and plans to expand by creating a permanent school. In addition, it runs workshops for street children, and has created the Anjali center in Siem Reap to provide them basic schooling.

Hi, Gunther,
You must be back yourself from one of the most fascinating trips we have experienced. Anli and I finally understand how the place can draw you back again and again. It's ancient ruins stand amongst us, reminding us that life passes us by, leaving behind only what each one of us has contributed while we pass this earth.
We return with the promise to be more in touch with our spiritual selves, to enjoy life every moment knowing that life is here and now. We enjoyed your lead and remember all that you have taught us.
We loved the company, the hotel and the camaraderie shared. Hope to see you soon.
Best regards,
Anli and Eleanor
World Photography day was on the 19th August

To celebrate the World Photography day on the 19th of August the Asian Photography Magazine launched a special issue, I am proud to be part of this years event. An old image comes to life again.
Asian Photography which is distributed through out India and south east Asia featured my image from 1983, no other than the Cover of Time Magazine,
this is in particular very appropriate as we experience all over the world environmental weather abnormalities. The image was taken during a very bad drought during 1983 in Australia. To read the small story I have provided a download as pdf on my website under Publications/Spreads go to:

A Graphic Expo/Techy Weekend
Yesterday, I was able to attend the Graphic Expo ‘07 at the Philippine Trade Training Center, as I brought along my dad, a tech enthusiast ( who inspired me to be one as well ), and my sister Strawberry, who is majoring in Multimedia Arts, so that I could show her what the latest gadgets and technology there in Pre-press and Imaging.
In the iMag Magazine travel issue, they have featured Gunther Deichmann. Gunther Deichmann is a brilliant photographer, he is described as a photographer who possesses the eyes of Dream Time. Dream Time, according to the Aborigines ( the natives of Australia ), is the land before time, or time outside of time. It’s a magical parallel universe that the past, present, and future occur at the same time. Quite wonderful, and mystical. Someone who has the eyes of magic, in my opinion, sees the spirit of the world. Seeing his pictures , somehow touched my soul, and I don’t know why.
Anyways, I’m swarmed with thoughts getting a new Macbook ( a lovetop! ), a new DSLR camera, a new laser printer, and more photography magazines. Argh, this is a sign that I should save up. Or maybe just earn more. Saving is just too hard!
Citrine charm, give me some cash inflow! Hahaha!
