To be conducted from September 7-11, 2007, this workshop is opened to all serious amateur and professional photographers who want to explore Cambodia’s Angkor Wat while learning the complexity of travel photography.

...While it will cover the place, its people and culture, the course will also be a learning experience from one of the best travel photographers—Gunther Deichmann. He will cover all aspects of shoot: solving technical problems, working with the locals, gaining access to certain places, the digital workflow, etc. He will also discuss what makes a successful travel photography.... Aside being a well-respected travel photographer, he is also an Apple Certified Instructor in Aperture.

The workshop will be preceeded by a cocktail at PCCI, two weeks before departure, to brief the participants and to give them the opportunity to know one another. The evenings of the workshop will be spent in sharing, critiquing of the day’s shoots and planning of the next.

At the end of the course, each participant will receive a Certificate of Completion from both PCCI and GDPHOTOWORKSHOP and a copy of Gunther’s book, Journey Through Colour and Time. Their photos will also be exhibited in the Participant’s Gallery in the GDPHOTOWORKSHOP website. Exhibited photos will automatically be entered in the Cambodia Photo Contest to be displayed at the PCCI Gallery.

...The total package price is US$1,650 (or peso equivalent) which includes airfare transportation from Manila-Siam Reap-Manila; 4 night-/5 day-accommodation at the 5-star Heritage Suites Hotel, breakfast, ground transportation and guides; Angkor Wat Heritage site permit fee and visa fee for Camboida; lectures at the Heritage Suite Hotel conference room; and a signed copy of Gunther Deichmann’s book Journey Through Colour and Time.

...Of German birth and a paleontologist by vocation, Deichmann settled in Australia when we was 21 years old where he got exposed to the beauty of the country.... His photographic opus appeared in different magazines such as the cover of Time Magazine (USA), Bulletin (Australia), Der Spiegel (Germany), Bunte (cover), National Magazine (South Africa), National Geographic, New York Times (USA), Sued Deutsche Zeitung (Germany), Grand Reportage (France), VSD (France), GEO (France), Terre Savage (France), and Figaro (France), and in other major book productions such as The Racing Game, National Geographic, Time-Life, Reader’s Digest, BBC (London). He recently published his own book entitled Journey Through Colour and Time— a 30-year collection of photographs on Austrialia, Europe, Asia, and Micronesia. Photos © Gunther Deichmann I was asked to put up a quick web site for one of our clients, as usual the deadline was yesterday... it is always like that. I used Aperture where my images have been located, dragged them to the desk top into a separate folder, the cool thing is, that my original files where off-line, I work within Aperture mainly with Referenced files, leaving my internal hard drive nice and clean. Then I dragged this folder let's call it "Marine Images" into iPhoto, once that was done I open iWeb, and from here it was a breeze.

Note: I could had left the "Marine Image" folder on my desktop as well, but this is my personal preference to bring it into iPhoto, keep in mind there are many different ways you can do this, it is really up to you or what you prefer or comfortable with, you have all the options and that is the nice part.

The integration again proved to be the winner here, I had access to all of my files within iWeb, never leaving it, or open any other software. I could have created also a simple site by using only Aperture, but in this case it required more creativity and options, which iWeb provided me. I published it to my .Mac account and was done, oh well not quiet, I was not happy with the background, so I quickly went back to iWeb changed the background and published the changes, including three images which had been stored in Aperture, again never leaving iWeb. A few minutes later, my changes went out in Cyber space, including a quick blog to announce the site.... I guess the podcast will follow within a few days, so stay tuned for some more exciting things to come. Yes, times have changed the way we do things today, by the way my client was amazed and happy that this was done in such a short time. Enjoy the site and feel free to send me your comments, this Blog comes from Rapid Weaver nice integration with iLife as well. The real cool part is, I could have done all of this from anywhere in the world, provided I have an internet connection, now that is something.

Cambodia-Podcast, GD PhotoWorkshop

<dc:subject>GUNTHER's BLOG</dc:subject>

For those who have never been to Cambodia and for those who like to be part of my PhotoWorkshop in September I have produced a small Podcast. For you who don’t know Hermes, let me explain: Hermes has been my trusted assistant and friend for the past 16 years. In Photography sometimes it is the assistant who is the one we rely on most, particular in complex situations, making it more easy to carry some of the heavy equipment, etc.,etc. But if he is also your friend then traveling is even more enjoyable, your friend becomes your assistant and travel companion, you can have a beer in the evenings with. Well and if you drink to much one night you have somebody to carry you home, whom you can trust. Photography assistants are sometimes taken for granted and don’t get the credit they deserve, maybe we can change this a bit now, we usually carry a tripod, so why don’t we bring a walking one along we can talk too and lets have a look at some of their images as well. So here it goes, last week I kept walking past Hermes computer and I noticed these great shots, see below. Hey, I thought why don’t we make them a bit more public or even better start a small series on good old Hermes, he deserves the credit and has taken some great shots during his time with and without me. Hermes, where did you get these nice shots? Oh, I went out after work the other day just across the road and shot them, it was a nice afternoon, great light. So I guess what we are going to do now and then run some images of Hermes on our blog for you to see, and a good old change from my stuff. Hermes, well done and keep it up my friend, I am proud of you. Gunther Deichmann... I thought this was going to be an 2 to 3 hour affair, but how wrong I was, 12 hours later I got back home, the Magazine needed the shots ASAP, so I downloaded the whole day shoot at 10:30PM, edited, caption and made some adjustments, by about 12:30 am I was done and had send the images direct from Aperture to my client in Europe, three days later I had 6 page spread in Globus Magazine Croatia.

About two days later my Agency in Germany was desperate to have a look at the Images as well, I got the email with the request and about 15 minutes later I had a selection in my Aperture Gallery, pressed the publish button and I was done, well not quiet the only thing left to do was to send an email with the link to my Agency.

...15 minutes later I received an email from my Agency stating the following: Wow, great stuff, can we get the exclusive for Germany? Well, I had to send one more email, yes go ahead.

Two years ago all of this would have taken about a day, hence the amount of images I had to edit, caption and doing some RAW file adjustments. Time has changed, thanks to Aperture I am more connected than ever before, oh, I forgot to mention the next day after the shoot I had all the high res. Images in my PhotoShelter archive. There is an old saying, once you get used to your favorite Pub you keep on going back there, you never leave that place, well it is the same with Aperture you just stay put, never leaving to go anywhere else and why should you, it is all there, completely furnished and integration, my favorite “Pub.” P- for publishing U- for unique B- for brilliant. ...gdeichmann@mac.com Hello Gunther, Love the new environment images. I think my favorite is the plain water drop on the leaf; that really says it for me. Addressing climate change has to be the biggest challenge mankind has faced, yet I am not totally pessimistic about our ability to solve it. Unlike the Mesopotamians or the Aztecs modern man has the scientific knowledge to identify the problem and propose solutions. Yes, we will have to accept some major changes to our lifestyles and means of production but capitalism has clearly won the ideological wars and of course its greatest strength is its capacity to rapidly adapt to change. So, I put my faith in science to find alternative energy sources. I am in favor of nuclear power as a stopgap solution until we can get solar and other sources fully developed. More later - have to do some more study.... To view my new collection on Environment images, please go to my Aperture Gallery: http://homepage.mac.com/gdeichmann/ENVIRONMENT%20PART%202/

Oh, yes I do love Cambodia, the people and culture, just an amazing place and only now I realized that my blog from some time ago had been picked up, it is truly amazing.

...Hello from Cambodia e-Visa, Mr. Klaus Moeller is a traveler who fell in love with our country. He has an interesting story which we would like to share with all of you.

A Touching Reunion After 8 Long Years Klaus Moeller, Germany, 21 May 2007 I have traveled to Cambodia on two previous occasions. I went to Cambodia 8 years ago and fell in love with the country.

...When I came home, I looked at this photo for 5 years - always wondering why I did not help her more!

Well, a year ago - I went back to Cambodia with my daughter and 6 of her friends from school.... It was amazing to find her - it took us nearly a whole day!

And so we took the photo of her holding her old photo! It was wonderful - and this time we did take care of her and her family.

I have traveled to Cambodia on two previous occasions and was excited to try out your new e-visa service.... It took me all but 10 minutes, reduced costs by eliminating Courier charges and I had my visa ready to print the next morning!... Gunther Deichmann covered Cambodia in his Book Journey Through Colour and Time extensively and six pages on the revival of the APSARA traditional Cambodian dances are dedicated to the APSARA Arts Foundation in Phnom Penh, for more info on Gunther's book please click the link below: http://web.mac.com/gdeichmann/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html or check out Gunther's website for more images on Cambodia at: http://www.deichmann-photo.com

VERY SOON - GD PHOTO WORKSHOPS

<dc:subject>GUNTHER's BLOG</dc:subject>

Photography is light... ...light is photography.

Below are some images, Dirk almost joined the Monastry and Dermot was going to move for good into the Heritage Hotels bathtub ha, ha.

Savuth Lim my trusted Guide and friend for many years with Dermot and Dirk in Siam Reap.

...Following the ADEX show, due to a change in airline schedules I had surprise chance to join my good friends Gunther Deichmann and Dirk Fahrenbach on their short trip to Siem Reap in Cambodia, home of the famous ancient temples including Angkor Wat.

...The trip to Siem Reap and the temples was absolutely wonderful and is a place I plan to go back to later this year. I took the time to do a quick inspection of some of the hotel properties there and came across a really nice 27 room boutique hotel called Heritage Suites www.heritage.com.kh Exquisite rooms.... Warm friendly staff, including General Manager Bernard Loyer with whom we had dinner at the hotel on two occasions along with some great wines. I plan to bring my wife with me on the next trip and I know she will love this hotel! I’m just not sure she’ll want to leave the giant free-standing bath tub in the hotel room to go tromping around ancient temples!

...Our local guide was Savuth Lim who did a great job of watching the weather and the light and making sure Gunther and Dirk were in the right places at the right times for excellent photography. Even more amazing was how he wheeled us around the crowds (and they can be big) and or took us to the less visited temples which are equally as stunning as the most popular one. Savuth is also chief of the local Tourist Transport Association which provides all sorts of transportation from Tuk-Tuks to taxis, cars and vans. Savuth arranged a car and driver to be at our service all day and joined us himself as our personal guide when we headed to the temples. He’s been guiding for Gunther for quite a number of years whenever he visits Siem Reap and it really made the trip smooth and easy. If you’re looking for a great local guide, contact Savuth by e-mail to make advance arrangements or call him when you get to Siem Reap.

Blue Planet Run: The Water Crisis

This article has just come to my attention, and we should put some real thought into this issue. I have just returned with my family from Puerto Galera in the Philippines where we spend a few days over the Xmas holidays.

Two good friends of mine which I had not seen for 5 years stayed at the same resort, this was a real coincident and a very happy reunion. Mark came up to me one day and ask me if I knew anything about Aperture, well I just started to grin and ask him why?

Mark is from Australia and just bought a Mac Book Pro, (15 inch) some 3 weeks ago, he is a very keen and good hobby Photographer and had Aperture in his Mac. So my vacation turned to some lecturing over the next few days, which was real fun, we went through the whole Mac system and of course Aperture. We sat down everyday for about an hour since we did not want to disturb his or my Family's Vacation to much. On my last day Mark rewarded me with lots of drinks at the Bar and we talked about the good old days until morning.

Mark and Targa own a top notch Dive Operation in Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia and used to work in Puerto Galera many years ago as Diving Instructors.

The weather was not that great but at least I made my friends very happy during the rain showers and I had some real fun too. www.deichmann-photo.com For more information on Aperture please click here: APERTURE Gunther G.D., Mark and Targa, at La Laguna Beach and Dive Resort

The images have been taken after the Apple - Aperture Conference in Siam Reap Cambodia, Nov. 2006. Of-course there are many more new images, this is only a portion of it and taken during a four day stay in Siam Reap. It was great to meet all the other Aperture photographers during this short but very interesting Conference, I made new friends and had a great time, thanks to Apple and Aperture. Enjoy the images.
