Caught; one unforgettable night with the Panasonic Lumix GX8

Traveling light, without sacrificing quality.

“Manila’s Water World.”

The song goes like this…
One night in Bangkok makes your heart go tumble…
…or a night at the Cave Wine bar makes
your shutter rumble.

It was certainly one of those days/nights I will remember for a long time and one of the reasons that you should never leave home without it… the camera that is.

Last week in Yakal Street, Makati, Manila, Philippines.
LUMIX DMC GX8 - Lumix G Vario 12-35mm f:2.8, ISO 2500

When I looked out the office window around 5PM I should have known better that this could be quiet a ride home. A dark almost black wall of clouds moving ever so much closer and sure enough by the time I reached my favorite Cave Wine Bar in Yakal Street, Makati with in minutes all hell broke loose.

For over an hour a super heavy torrential Monsoon rain hammered us, and Yakal Street turned into a flowing river. There was no way I could get home now, but then I guess it could have been worst, at least I was not stuck in traffic but had the good company of my friends Hubert and Othmar at the Cave Wine Bar who shared the same fate with me.

"Trying to get home" very sweet, the Filipino way
LUMIX DMC GX8 - Lumix G Vario 12-35mm f:2.8, ISO 2500

There was no shortage of exquisite wine and food and the thought crossed my mind getting stuck into a few good bottles of Red, however been intoxicated made no sense either, somehow we all had to get home at one point.

We had a few glasses of wine, (or was it two…) some snacks and then as time progressed the “street/river” kept on flowing so I decided to take action. I grabbed my Lumix GX8 (I always carry that one with me, rain or shine) went out to the front and shot what ever swam or walked by. I might add it was quiet interesting, stuck in one place and just observing what does come by in particular when the street turned into a river in the middle of the night.

Not sure
LUMIX DMC GX8 - Lumix G Vario 12-35mm f:2.8, ISO 2500

It was now way past 9:00PM and the “river” was up high, people walking or trying at least to get home, cars driving in all direction (Yakal street is a one-way street) and motorbikes pushing their way through the flooded streets barely making it.

Chaotic is putting it mildly, it was one of those days in Manila, nothing moved and this was not the only street as we found out. In just 1.5 hours, a heavy tropical downpour turned Manila into Water World.

But I was at least in very good company…my friends, a few glasses of wine and my LumixGX8 with the 12 to 35mm f/2.8 lens. Standing now outside the Wine Bar watching life "Swim” by, and occasionally going inside to have another sip on my wine…

I set and varied the ISO between 2500 and 3200 for all featured images on this post, wide open at F: 2.8 and the exposure changed from 1/40 at the highest shutter speed way down to ¼ of a sec. everything was hand held, after all it was night.

The mixed lightening from cars, motorbikes, street and Neon Signs lights made also for some interesting challenges. Lucky I had the blue corrugated Iron wall in the background that gave me some clean background for most images and provided me with some interesting color combinations.

This was also the first time I used such high ISO on the Lumix GX8 and as the night went on I used the 4K Photo setting for a few frames too.

High Heels and no Heels, around 11:30PM
LUMIX DMC GX8 - Lumix G Vario 12-35mm f:2.8, ISO 3200 -
4K Photo setting

I guess it worked out to be another extreme test for the new Lumix GX8, this was certainly not planned but I ended up not been drunk or bored, (which is a good thing sometimes) indeed it became a very long night and by the time I got home (traffic was still bad) it was way past 3:15AM.

Again the GX8 performed flawless and even got wet, it surprised me how well it handled the high ISO including the 4K Photo settings at times.

Actually the “noise” at this high ISO that showed up is very nice more like grain from the good old film days, as for post processing I had to do very little or almost none. The White Balance was set on Auto during the whole duration of the night an shooting in RAW formats with the exception of the 4K Photo.

BTW; the images look so much better in RGB and on a big iMac Screen and they hold up for big prints, no worries at all.

These are only a few images and many more were taken during this truly NOT so boring night.

So, never leave home without it… the camera that is, because you never know where you end up and if you’re “Lucky” you might end up like me on a flooded street or in the
Cave Wine Bar, Yakal Street, Makati.

Tip: In cases like this I recommend to leave your wife or girlfriend at home.

Cheers GD

Review: The new Panasonic Lumix GX8 in the real field, performance beyond my expectations.

Traveling Light without sacrificing quality

Wow... I made it, I actually managed to get this Blog Post out today and what better reason then talking about my latest experience with the new Panasonic Lumix DMC GX8 in the Philippines and Thailand.

I have been using this latest marvel for some time now even prior my recent trip to Thailand for the Regional Launch of the
Panasonic LUMIX GX8.

As you know from my previous reports and reviews I don’t talk much about all the features and the other technical stuff in details but I rather let my images do the talking. However I might point out just a few interesting details like the
Dual Stabilizing feature combining the in Body stabilizing system with the in lens stabilizer.

- The LUMIX GX8 integrates Dual I.S. (Image Stabilizer)* for more effective results.
The GX8's body I.S. works in tandem with the LUMIX lens I.S. for maximum stabilization.
-

Please note, in order to use both stabilizers you need to perform a
Firmware update on some lenses, not a big deal and straight forward.

Dramatic Sunset over Manila, Philippines,
LUMIX DMC GX8 - Lumix G Vario 12-35mm f2.8, ISO 200

There is the new sensor with 20.3 Mega Pixels and the amazing 4K Photo options that let you shoot at 30 frames in sequence. and you be able to select the best images from the batch very easy in camera. (and of course you still have you 4K Video option too)

- The LUMIX GX8 employs the newly-developed 20.3-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor that achieves high-speed bursts, ISO25600 high sensitivity, and a wider dynamic range. Combined with the Venus Engine, the GX8 achieves clear image rendering with minimum noise, even in low-light situations. -

Another great new edition that I truly love is the new Body, slightly larger but splash and dust proof now. I had this camera in a very heavy downpour recently and it performed just great.
I don’t recommend this but if needed or the situation arises you can go ahead without missing that shot. Of course the autofocus is extremely fast and performed superb. even under very dark condition or at night.
The menu is nicely organized and you don’t have to be a Genius to figure it out, also the access to the Buttons is well done and with a click you can switch to
4K Photo if needed.

- The LUMIX GX8 camera body is composed of a magnesium alloy, full diecast front
and rear frame. Tight seals on every joint, dial and button enable splashproof / dustproof performance.-

I am going to stop now with all this technical stuff and rather provide you with some more info below the images. I might add due to the excellent color rendition and a perfect grey balance (like with most Lumix Cameras) I was shooting in RAW and high JPG. I didn’t have to perform almost no post processing or very little on the RAW files like…Raw conversion in Lightroom, basic sharpening, cropping straightening, or adding some contrast.

Ohhh… you might noticed, yes I am using
Lightroom now, a transition I had to make some time ago due to Aperture not been supported any more by Apple.
More on that issue later…

Before we go to the images in details, my experience in the real field, not in the Lab, studio or just testing for the sake of testing, the
Lumix GX8 out performed beyond my expectations, I just love it! As a matter of fact I am using some of these images already for commercial purpose and for publications.
Yet, the
GX8 it is still small enough to carry with you all the time and you can fit it in your Pocket (larger pocket) with the awesome 20mm lens attached.

OK that is enough now, lets have a look at those images…

Note: A real mix selection on a variety of subjects, trying to show the versatility of the GX8. All photos taken without Tripod using different Lumix Lenses, a mix of Aperture and ISO settings, the White Balance was set on Auto, shooting RAW and high JPG only.

Photography: Watercolor the spontaneous and fluid look in water reflecting an array of colors

"Watercolor" the spontaneous and fluid look in water…

It has been a while since my last Blog post and today I like to share with you images of one of my favorite subjects "Watercolor" and pure reflections, see below a selection of images from different Countries.

I treasure water, the gift of our Planet to all living beings, without we can't sustain Life. It is easily the most precious liquid on earth, unfortunately it is also abused and seldom appreciated. During my travels in the arid regions of Australia I truly learned how to conserve this precious liquid, careful not wasting a drop.

I have also created a NEW Gallery in my PhotoShelter Archives where you can find many more images from my Journey through
"Watercolors and Reflections."

"My Watercolor" is like life, you have to get it right the first time -
there is no second chance. It is a constant movement of colors
and patterns created by the magic liquid called water.

The spontaneous and fluid look in water reflecting an array of colors from

I
t has been a week since I returned from a 5 week Journey to Sri Lanka and India, but the Internet sucked, including here since then… getting me even more behind schedule. Ahhh well...

Hopefully while I am typing the connection is not going to let me down again by the time I am ready to upload this post, I just have to cross my fingers…

There was little time or no connection to post anything during my travels but then getting the images in field is much more important and enjoyable, hence the reason for this long overdue post.

I am still in a major editing mode even so Aperture 3 has made my life a lot easier these days, but it is the fine tuning in the end that is time consuming and the decision making is never ending for those images.

I keep the writing fairly brief today, heaps of things to do, the editing from the last trip and catching up with emails. I am also planning new international Workshops and Photo Tours to India in 2014 and working on some excellent destinations for 2015 namely Tibet and Bhutan. I am updating the Calendar on my GD Photo Tours/Workshops shortly with all those amazing new destinations, so please stay tuned.

Please Note: If you like to participate in the amazing and confirmed Hornbill Festival in Nagaland, India scheduled for Nov. 30th - Dec. 12th, 2014 please advise me ASAP since there is only very limited accommodation available and we have to receive your bookings and confirmations way in advance.
The same applies also for the confirmed Photo Tour to the
- Hemis Festival in Ladakh - July 01 - July 12, 2014.

While I am trying to get this all done I have to make a trip to Cebu next week for a Digital Photo Exhibition, Seminars and Workshop at the new Power Mac Center Training facilities. There just not enough hours in the day… grrrrr

But now back to our recent Journey to Sri Lanka and the Thar Desert in India, everything went just great and all the Participants managed to get some amazing images.

In Sri Lanka we had some great wildlife shooting opportunities including the sighting of some 5 elusive Sri Lankan Leopards in one day alone, plus a vast number of amazing birds, Elephants, Mongoose etc. etc.
But we visited also some great cultural sites and had a breathtaking sunrise high in the mountain. I might add, getting up at 2:30AM was not so inspiring but in the end worth every bit of it.

A few weeks later we traveled from Sri Lanka to India into the fascinating Thar Desert which is teaming with wildlife, amazing Culture, a rich history, friendly people and vibrant colors all around us. And the truly amazing experience for everyone in the group when we confronted thousand of migratory Demoiselle
cranes in the Thar Desert.

In due time I post a few more short articles, relating specifically to certain areas and talk about first hand experiences.

During the entire Journey I only used the Lumix GH3 and the new GX7 with a variety of lenses including the amazing 100 to 300mm lens for most of the wildlife images. (35mm equivalent to 200 – 600mm) More info on the Camera performance later, but I can state already they performed exceptional well in all situations.

“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.”

On a more personal note I certainly did enjoy the company of all participants, we had some very early mornings, late evenings but somehow managed to have a little fun in between.

Also a nice
Déjà vu since I had not done much wildlife photography for a long time, I actually started my Photography in Kakadu National Park, Australia, and Sri Lanka was a nice welcome back to the old days.
