It is my pleasure and share with you that I have officially reached 10.2 million Hits and some 180,000 Visitors on my Website and Blog in 2012. (over a 12 month period)
Thanks to all my readers, friends, followers and supporters who made this possible.
This is certainly a new milestone and I try my very best to keep you posted with interesting articles and photos in 2013.
Next week I have a quick trip to Boracay Island and on Feb. 8 and 9 in cooperation with Power Mac Center a two-day photo workshop in Subic Bay (Subic Park Hotel in Zambales) on basic photography and digital photo management with an introduction to Aperture 3.

Then by mid February I am leaving for some 3 weeks to Myanmar/Burma also know as the Golden Land and described by Rudyard Kipling in his novel Road to Mandalay. After Myanmar I am off to Cambodia for a few more weeks, a Country I have been visiting since 1992 with its ancient temples from the vast Khmer empire. The images on todays post are from both of these Countries.

Our first Photo Tour and Workshop in 2013 is to Myanmar, this one is fully booked and so is our very special exploratory (very limited number of Participants) trip to Cambodia.
I like to call this one… rural exploration and the mighty Tonle Sap Lake… there is a lot more to explore and discover in CAMBODIA, besides amazing Temples and Monks, hence my reason for choosing different images for this post, more on this subject after my return…

In the corridors of S 21 Prison as I have know it in 1992 in Phnom Penh, (now called Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum) and a stark reminder of the atrocities by the Pol Pot regime, one get the eerie feeling of been watched by Ghosts.
Aperture 3.3 upgrade issues and a quick glance how to find all those new features
A quick and first glance at Aperture 3.3 and
how to find all those new features, plus some issues.
Tips and upgrading issues you should watch out for… so lets get started.
It's been some 24 hours since the new release of Aperture 3.3… quiet a chunk to download and if you have not done so make sure you have a good and reliable internet connection. How much improvements do we get and has Aperture 3.3 improved?
In my opinion and at a first glance I like what I have seen so far, but it is way to early for final conclusions until I am done with my test driving…still in progress.
NOTE: I heard some conflicting reports from users that there is some issues between Lion 10.7.4 and Snow Leopard… Aperture 3.3 will NOT run on Snow Leopard, however I could not confirm or test this since I am running Lion, but if this is the case then Apple should have advised on this issue, and for those still running on Snow Leopard it is certainly a blow and they have to upgrade to Lion. (I recommend anyway)

Beware that some 32-bit Plug-in don't work any more unfortunately Apple did not mention this and you only find out after you upgraded to 3.3 I am not so depending on Plug-ins but for some other folks out there it maybe an issue.
I have for example the DxO Film pack 3 installed (using it for testing purpose only) and this one is not working, everything runs now on 64-bit and until some Plug-ins change from 32-bit to 64-bit they won't work. So be careful here, all support for 32-bit Plug-ins are gone in Aperture 3.3
Upon launch you be prompted to update your Aperture Library to 3.3
You be also prompted to upgrade your Library upon launch and depends on how many images you have, this could take quiet a while, the same applies to the new iPhoto 9.3 too.
New iPhotoLibrary also needs to be upgraded
The User Interface has a new look and the colors are gone for the Smart Albums, Projects etc., etc. this might take some getting use to it, but I had no problems finding things very quick and I was up and running in no time.
All color Icons are gone in the new interface.
Another interesting change is that Aperture 3.3 and iPhoto 9.3 using now a unified photo-library, this really will not affect me so much but can be very useful for some people out there who like to move from iPhoto 9.3 to Aperture 3.3 making the switch a lot easier. What's New in Aperture 3.3
- New unified photo library for both iPhoto (v 9.3 or later) and Aperture; no import/export required; Faces, Places, slideshows, albums and web sharing work across both applications
- Support for AVCHD video has been added
- Aperture now lets you use camera-generated previews for faster browsing of RAW files immediately after import
- Highlights & Shadows tool has been updated to deliver higher-quality results and work with extended range data
- A new Auto Enhance button has been added to the Adjustments panel
- White Balance tool now includes Skin Tone and Natural Gray modes to simplify color balance
- Auto button has been added to the White Balance tool for one-click color balancing
- Set Desktop command has been added to Share menu so you can set a desktop background from within Aperture
- A new Manual option allows you to drag and drop projects to customize sort order in the Projects view
- New preference allows you to set the background brightness of the full screen browser
- Facebook, Flickr, and MobileMe albums are now displayed as thumbnails in the main window when accounts are selected in the source list
- Minor terminology changes, including "Original" instead of "Master" and "Info" instead of "Metadata"
- Source list includes a new "Recent" section, showing Last Import and recently-viewed projects
- Raw Fine Tuning is no longer displayed in the Adjustments panel by default
- Faces can now be named by dragging them from the Unnamed Faces browser to existing snapshots on the corkboard
- The Faces corkboard now includes a menu that allows you to set the order of face snapshots
- Newly designed monochrome source list and toolbar icons
- Addresses numerous issues related to overall performance and stability
The update is recommended for all users of Aperture 3.
What's New in Version 9.3
• iPhoto can now open libraries from Aperture 3.3 or later
• AVCHD video is now supported
• The Description field now automatically expands as needed when entering text
• You can now flag a photo in Magnify (1-up) view by clicking a Flag icon displayed in the upper left corner of the photo
• Keywords and titles are now preserved when exporting files with embedded GPS location data
• A new Export option allows you to automatically organize exported photos into subfolders by event
The update is recommended for all users of iPhoto '11.

After a 5-week Journey through Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan the editing and culling back of images is complete. (still working a bit on Nepal, had to have a break before I get square eyes)
But the main editing has been complete for quiet some time, thanks to the outstanding performance on my Mac BookPro using Aperture 3.
Ohhhh…I don’t know what I would have done without Aperture…my thoughts drifting back to the old days using Kodachrome film, labeling and sorting through mountains of plastic cases.
Honestly I do miss my Kodachromes but then times have changed, some for the better and some for the worst, it is almost all digital now.
(I do admire some of my good old friends who still shoot with film, but mainly in B/W now)

I do as much editing with Aperture while still on the road and by the time I get home a lot is done already. (rough and first edit only)
Back home; first I back up all those images (Aperture Libraries) from my portable Lacie Rugged drives to my Lacie Raid system, then some more editing and later upload selected images on to my PhotoShelter site. PhotoShelter; yet another welcome addition in todays digital age for safe keeping, storing and selling your images.
Through out the entire trip Aperture performed just awesome, at times pushing my Mac and Aperture to the limits.
Tip: I strongly recommend that you do all your key wording, captions etc. while on location, it will only take a few extra minutes during or after import but everything is still fresh in your mind.
Oh… I can do this later when I am back home, I am to tiered now…believe me, you never end up doing it or you forgotten all those places. (we’re only talking some 5 to 10 extra minutes here)
I am forcing myself in doing just that, it saves me a lot of time and my NEW images can be up on PhotoShelter or my own site within a few days after my return.

I might mention also for those who are located in the Philippines, we have some Aperture 3 classes (Aperture Level Basic and Beyond) scheduled, starting in June through to December at the brand new PMC Power Mac Center AATC facilities at Arnaiz, Makati, Philippines. You might ask why Aperture? Aperture’s capability is greatly underestimated in particular when it comes to editing huge number of photos. It has a superb and easy to use filing structure, not to mention all those other adjustments, but for large number of photos, I believe it is the best software out there.
Now you might think I am biased when it comes to Aperture; well I have been using it since day one and never looked back and this is not the first time I had to deal with so many photos.
How could I have edited 18,000 or so images in Photoshop in just a few days? No way, I be still working for the next 3 month.
Once you understand the fundamentals of Aperture 3 the rest is easy, exceptional fast and very efficient. Spend some time with it, study the tutorials or enroll in a classroom session with Aperture.

Asia Travel Photography: First impressions, the Journey continuous in Bhutan with GD Photo Workshop.
Bhutan… Land of the Thunder Dragon
After a long Journey I have returned and only now found the time to update my Blog…it has been over 6 weeks since my last entry.
My Journey started in Sri Lanka then to Nepal and from there to Bhutan where I meet most of the participants for our GD Photo Workshop who flew in from Bangkok, Thailand.

Flying from Nepal to Bhutan was just breathtaking, we had a superb clear sky and the 45 minute Journey via Druk Air (Bhutan’s only Airlines) took us along the Himalayas with a perfect view of Mount Everest. Then came the approach to Paro Airport… wow that was exciting, flying through Valleys before touching down.
Sri Lanka was absolutely fantastic again with some spectacular landscapes and wildlife and Nepal wow…my trip coincided with some cool festivals there and on my way back from Bhutan via Kathmandu we picked up the full moon festival in little Tibet.
But these stories and Images have to wait until I am done with Bhutan…so lets start with the Land of the Thunder Dragon the amazing Kingdom of Bhutan.
On our second day we left Paro and set off for the famous Monastery the Tigers Nest perched high on the cliffs at approx. 3200 meters. We all decided to go by Horseback and my experience from the Outback of Australia came in very handy with the exception that the track took us along the cliffs ever so close to the edge… our return Journey for more than hours had to be made on foot since it is to risky for the Horses on the way down.

Bhutan is a destination like no other. Identified as one of the 10 bio-diversity hot spots in the world, this ancient kingdom first cautiously opened its doors to tourism in1974. Ever since, visitors have been mesmerized by Bhutan’s timeless Buddhist culture, soaring snowcapped peaks, and magnificent landscape dotted with numerous monasteries, temples and Dzongs (fortresses).

In due time I post again the Images behind the scenes and of course the participants work, you see all the fun we had, not only from the Tigers Nest but from very cold mornings “chilling out” at higher altitude.
My sincere gratitude and thanks to our Bhutanese Guide Sonam Dendup and Driver Tschering, who certainly were some of the very best I ever worked with.
Oh… not to forget… the Bhutanese people they were exceptional friendly and charming where ever we went…they are very beautiful people and so traditional.

Image above: At the Talo Tshechu Festival, I only found out later, after showing my Guide Sonam Dendupthe photo that the old Gentleman on the right is the famous Bhutanese singer Ap Dhopay who is from Talo under Punakha district. He has been serving the 3rd King for many years and later joined the Royal Academy of Performing Arts (famously known as Royal Dancer) He sang many traditional songs and is keen in the preservation of the culture and tradition in Bhutan. He was awarded a Silver Jubilee Gold Medal in the year 1999 by the 4th King of Bhutan.

In due time, once I have finished my editing I share more images with you on my Photo Shelter site updating my main website and on this Blog. For today I have selected only a few images, first impression from Bhutan the “Land of the Thunder Dragon.”
I might add Aperture 3 performed absolutely flawless, handling with ease almost 20,000 images during the duration of the entire trip.
I am going to alternate my Blog post’s, next in line is from Nepal and then Sri Lanka, please stay tuned for a lot more in the coming weeks.

FYI… our next GD Photo Workshop in ASIA starts on 29th of June in Myanmar, and I might add, this is a very special one with some exciting new locations.

Finished the last Aperture 3 advanced tutorial at the Power Mac Center last week, got some important meetings out of my way and now the TIME has come…the packing has started (mind you very light) for our Cultural - Archaeological, Travel and Adventure GD Photo Workshops to Laos - Cambodia and Myanmar.
I report whenever possible but my Blog Posts will be a bit thin from now on, however I try to stay in touch via Facebook and Twitter.

In todays post, definitely the last one prior my departure (next one I have no clue from where) I have chosen only images taken with my iPhone and my little Leica D-Lux 4 which are my companion most of the time and the reason for my favorite quote by Ernst Haas; read the complete story below:

Ernst Haas commented on this in a workshop in 1985:
Two laddies from Nova Scotia had made a huge effort to be there and were great Leica fans, worked in a camera store, saved to have them and held Ernst on high for being a Leica user (although he used Nikons on his Marlboro shoots, when the chips were down).
About four days into the workshop, he finally maxxed out on the Leica adoration these kids displayed, and in the midst of a discussion, when one of them asked one more question aimed at establishing the superiority of Wetzlar;
Ernst said, "Leica, schmeica. The camera doesn't make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE."
Nobody talked about Leica, Nikon, Canon or any other brand of camera equipment for the rest of the workshop.
He also said, "Best wide-angle lens? 'Two steps backward' and 'look for the ah-ha'."

Yep, that is me in 1992 outside a French Cafe in Phnom Penh and my first visit to Cambodia covering a story on the Mekong River for Animan Magazine, no digital…no laptops, etc. just the good old film…and a bit younger mind you. Since then I have been visiting Cambodia almost yearly, continuously discovering the undiscovered…
and definitely Ferme Le Lundi!

Hands on…The Digital Dark Room and Aperture 3, we finished yesterday our first session for this week, (three hours per session) now another 2 more to go and a special advanced one at the Power Mac Center on the weekend. All this week we have Aperture 3 action, and 3 more days next week.
The Digital Dark Room with Aperture 3 has been organized in cooperation with Power Mac Center and Filipinas Heritage Library. Special thanks to my Assistant Arj, Mark, Joseph and Jeoffrey from the technical support team at PMC for helping out behind the scene. And of course thanks for the ever so organized Cecille from the Filipinas Heritage Library.
Yesterday afternoon Aperture 3 and the Digital Dark Room at
Power Mac Center Makati, Manila Philippines
We show you the ultimate way of editing your photos with Apple's Aperture 3 software, creating proper back ups, how to add music to your Aperture 3 slideshow using GarageBand plus a lot more. The technical staff from Power Mac Center is also around to help with technical questions and trouble shooting on Apple's latest operating system the OS X Lion.
Very busy for the next few weeks, plus one more advanced course on Aperture 3 in September at PMC, all this before I have to get ready for my GD Photo Workshops to Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar.

There is some good news and bad news, some older Mac's don't support Airdrop so if you installed Lion and can't find the AirDrop Icon then most likely your machine does not support AirDrop. However you can always use DropCopy and that works fine a cool little application, very useful also for your iPhone and iPad (Mobile DropCopy) to transfer files, OK on OS X Lion.

AirDrop is one of the great new features of Lion that provides a really easy way to share files between supported, Wi-Fi enabled Macs, without having to connect through the local Wi-Fi network.
AirDrop will automatically discover all the other Wi-Fi-enabled Macs running AirDrop that are near your computer (this may take a few seconds). To make sure you’re in the Finder, click the desktop (the background area of your screen), or click Finder on the Dock.
Note: If AirDrop isn't listed under the Go menu or doesn't appear in Finder window sidebars, your Mac doesn't support this feature.

It all started on Thursday the 27th of May 2010, after undergoing some major renovation the past few months PMC open its doors again with a big Bang, attended by celebrities, personalities and Press it was certainly a party to remember not to mention the great food and drinks.
Apple representatives from Singapore attended plus some "Super Heros" where walking the floor. Well, that was day one...the celebration continuous with yesterdays appearance of the famous Philippine All-Stars cool music and lots of fun.
If you need a new Mac, iPod Touch or what ever your heart desires drop in to this truly amazing...awesome new PMC and avail of up to 15% discount which is still available until Sunday. My good friend Luis Harder and Photographer did just that yesterday, walking out of the door with a new iPod Touch for his wife and a cool iMac for his office.

Hey Dad have a look… this is what the iPod hard drive looks like…I turned around and had a quick look but my good old iPod was still in one piece, Mark Lee don’t scare the daylights out of me…
Since Mark –Lee started to work at the Power Mac Center in Greenbelt, Makati, he got into this habit of scaring the old man now and then. Like today when friends gave him an old iPod that was beyond repair, he took it apart and just walked up to me and said, hi Dad have a look what an iPod hard drive looks like, then he got me going I thought he had just dismantled my trusted 80 Gig iPod with my cool Blues Collection.

He wouldn’t dare or would he? But my iPod was safe, and when I saw the small hard drive it reminded me of an old Gramophone or Record Player so I guess old ideas die-hard. Having a Son who loves Mac and works at an Authorized Apple Center can have its benefits but be ready for the odd scare or two.

Don’t try this at Home, if you ever have a problem with your iPod I highly recommend to take it to the next Apple Service Center.

During my recent Photography and Aperture 2 Workshop at the Power Mac Center, Honey Machuca from THINK BIG Events Management www.thinkbigevents.ph presented me with this soooooo cute Nikon D2X Camera made by Hand just for this occasion.
What else can I say…but thank you so much Honey, you are very talented indeed producing such a small Camera with all the details, even the lens has glass…very cool and thanks again.

Remember…this was supposed to happen last week but due to Typhoon Fengshen (Frank) the Aperture 2 and Photography Workshop was moved to last Sunday. We had a record attendance and I like to thank all participants for taken the time being with me at the Power Mac Center for this fun event.

Besides the Workshop a lot of other things happen at the same time around the Power Mac Center, customers receiving a cool Tattoo I LOVE Mac, T. -shirts and Camera Straps give away, plus participants from the workshop received their certificate for being part off it. To my surprise some very familiar faces showed up during our first session, John Chua from Ad Photo, Photographer Kevin Hamdorf who drove all the way from Subic Bay with his Daughter and Rose his Graphic Designer, good old Bebet Gaudinez a Lightroom user who attended my Photo Workshop in Cambodia last year and Vincent Leterrier who participated in one of my earlier workshops made his presence felt with some very cool images he shot recently.

All participants had to go out and shoot a number of images which we later imported into Aperture 2, then we did some adjustments, cropping and changing a few into Black & White using the Monochrome Mixer.

Again two Groups starting the first at 1PM until 5PM then from 5PM way past 8PM a long but fun day. Thanks to Honey Machuca from Think Big, of course to the Management and technical staff at the Power Mac Center for providing me with a non stop supply of Coffee and made sure everything went smooth, they did a great job. Thanks also to Mark-Lee Deichmann for some troubleshooting and Hermes Singson for all the images behind the scene. Thanks to Canon Philippines for providing us with an excellent projector.

The Work Shop was a basic introduction into Aperture 2 with all the possibilities after the shoot, demonstrating the total integration on the Mac with short demos on iLife and iWorks...plus a lot more including a short critique session on the images.

Congratulation to Luis Martin Harder one of my students from the Cambodian GDPhotoWorkshop last year…he really went out his way and show cased his very first Exhibition on the 13th of May in Manila.
Since Cambodia he has done real well, more than 30 images from Cambodia and the Philippines are on display, very impressive work I might add and I am very proud of him.
A good and mixed crowed attended the opening night at the One Workshop Gallery including other familiar faces like good old Bebet Gaudinez (I am just waiting to see
his Exhibition) and Jasmine Manabat who also attended my PhotoWorkshop last year,
almost like a “little reunion”.
Photographers like Wig Tysman, Tilak Hettig, George Tapan and many other personalities including Henry Bateman Artist/Writer showed up to give Luis the credit he deserves, of course the host Photographer Master printer and Artist Ross Capilli and his wife made sure everybody had enough to drink and eat. Thanks Ross.
Congratulations again to Luis Harder for a great show and super cool images…
